Introduction to the Science & Technology Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Belgium

The Science Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Belgium represents the National Science Council of the Republic of China on Taiwan. The NSC is in charge of coordination and support of research and technology development in Taiwan. Through 12 Liaison Offices overseas, the NSC promotes international scientific and technological cooperation.

In 1959 the Republic of China on Taiwan established the ¡¨National Council on Science Development¡¨ to train and recruit manpower and to support academic research. Eight years later the name was changed into ¡§National Science Council¡¨. The NSC is responsible for establishing the policy and coordinating research in the field of science and technology in Taiwan. Since no country in the world can do research independently, several Liaison Offices were established in the United States of America, in Europe and in Japan.

Since 1992 the NSC is represented in Brussels. This office concentrates its activities on the Commission of the European Union, the Benelux and the Scandinavian countries. The main task of the Science Division is to promote cooperation in the field of science and technology.

The Science Division provides all kinds of information on science and technology and research institutes in Taiwan. Through this office scientists in Taiwan obtain updated information on the status of science and technology in Europe. The Science Division thus acts as a go-between, since it has established contacts with universities and scientific research institutes of both Taiwan and Europe.

The Science Division helps to intensify the scientific relations between Taiwan and Europe. In order to obtain a mutual understanding of the development of scientific research in Europe and Taiwan, our office promotes the exchange of published materials. In order to enhance contacts between scientific research institutes, seminars, symposia, joint research projects and mutual visits are organized. Our office helps to arrange and assist these seminars, projects and visits of European scholars to Taiwan and vice versa.

Since 2002 Dr. Joseph R.F. Hsu is the director of the Science Division of the Taipei Representative Office. He is assisted by Ms. Ling-Ring Tsai, executive secretary, and Mr. Xavier Liao, secretary.
