National Science Council

 

 

The National Science Council (NSC) is responsible for the promotion of development in science and technology in Taiwan. There are eight departments and four offices within the NSC. In addition, there are four affiliated organizations and six national research laboratories under the NSC.

Academia Sinica

 

 

Academia Sinica was founded in 1928. As the highest academic institution in Taiwan, it has two basic missions: conducting scientific research in its own institutes, as well as providing guidance, channels of communication, and encouragement to raising academic standards in the country.

National Central Library

 

 

The main goals of the National Central Library are to assist academic research, to sponsor cultural and educational activities, and to promote the professional development of librarianship in all the country's libraries.

National Palace Museum

 

 

The main goals of the National Palace Museum are protecting and preserving the 7000-year cultural legacy of China with advanced technologies, cooperating with private connoisseurs and ushering in exhibitions from the Mainland, bringing the Museum's collection to the global community, and welcoming arts of the world to the Museum.

National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium

 

 

 

The National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium serves a very important role in national education and cultural construction. The main goals are to provide information, to support academic research, to organize entertaining exhibitions, to promote international cooperation, to promote the local people's knowledge and standard of living, to promote the conservation concept and skills of marine life.

Central Geological Survey

 

 

 

The Central Geological Survey (CGS), under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, is the only government agency responsible for geological survey and geoscience research. The fundamental work includes geologic survey, research, and compilation of geological map sheets that provide basic geological information. The Survey is also involved in investigations of environmental geology, hydrogeology, geological hazards, active faults, landslides, engineering geology, and mineral resources that are important to national economic and urban development and major construction projects.

Postal Service

 

 

Website for foreigners on the postal service of Taiwan. The state-run postal service operates as an enterprise in order to earn profit for the government treasury. The modern Chinese Postal Service began as a mail courier over one century ago.

Institute of Transportation

 

 

The Institute of Transportation (IOT) serves as the think tank of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. The transportation service includes roadway transportation, marine transportation, and air transportation; among them, bus services, cargo services, and information services are especially closely related to the publics daily life.

Center of Harbor and Marine Technology

 

 

The major duties of the Institute of Harbor and Marine Technology (IHMT) include: research and development of harbor- and ocean-related engineering techniques; education and training of engineers in related professions; resolving practical problems associated with harbor or marine construction works and coastal zone developments; etc.

Taipei Veterans General Hospital

 

 

Since its founding in 1959, the Taipei Veterans General Hospital has been dedicated to three equally important functions: medical education, medical research, and medical services. Additionally, it provides technical supports to eleven veterans hospitals located throughout Taiwan

 

 

Institute of Nuclear Energy Research

 

 

The Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) was established 30 years ago. It is the only domestic and specialized nuclear energy R&D institution in Taiwan, under the supervision of the Atomic Energy Council.

National Research Institute of Chinese Medicine

 

 

The National Research Institute of Chinese Medicine includes four research sections, an information section, a herbal drug quality control center and a biological activities screening center.

Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories

 

 

Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories (TL), under the supervision of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, has for the past three decades contributed significantly to Taiwan's telecom technology development and still takes a leading role in the telecom R&D.

Industrial Technology Research Institute

 

 

The Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan is a national-level non-profit R&D organization which carries out projects entrusted by government and private companies.

Opto-Electronics and Systems Laboratories

 

 

The Opto-electronics and Systems Laboratories (OES) at ITRI, has a proven record as an interface with Taiwan's opto-electronics and photonics industries. The mission is to research, develop, and transfer to Taiwan industry, new opto-electronics technologies that increase competitiveness and bring new market opportunities.

Electronics Research and Services Organization

 

 

The Electronics Research and Service Organization (ERSO) of ITRI was established in 1974. ERSO not only played a major role but literally gave birth to Taiwan's modern electronics industry through technology transfers and spin-offs.

Mechanical Industry Research Laboratories

 

 

The Mechanical Industry Research Laboratories (MIRL) of ITRI was established in 1969. Today the main missions are establishing demonstration facilities for precision machine tool and precision gears, introducing foreign new technologies to upgrade domestic manufacturing level for machine tools, sending staffs overseas for advanced technology learning, incubating R&D capabilities, providing personnel training and technology services to the industries.

Materials Research Laboratories

 

 

The mission of the Materials Research Laboratories (MRL) of ITRI is developing material related technologies to help Taiwan's industry compete in the world market.

Computer and Communications Research Labs

 

 

Computer and Communications Research Labs (CCL), a division of ITRI, was established in 1990 with the objective of developing system technology that integrates computer, communications and consumer electronics, the so-called 3C technologies.

Institute for Information Industry

 

 

The Institute for Information Industry (III) was founded in 1979 by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The intent for establishing this non-profit organization was to unite the strengths from the government and private sectors, for promoting the information industry and information applications development and usage, with the aim of strengthening the productivity and competitiveness of all industries.

Taiwan Institute of Economic Research

 

 

Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER) was established in 1976 as the first private independent research institute in Taiwan. The purposes of the Institute are to actively engage in research on domestic and foreign macroeconomics and industrial economics, to provide consultations for government and businesses, and to promote Taiwan's economic development

Taiwan Construction Research Institute

 

 

Taiwan Construction Research Institute (TCRI) is a non-profit organization that aims to promote advanced construction ideas and technology. It strives to improve the construction standards in Taiwan. TCRI also plays the key coordination role between foreign and local construction agencies.

 

 

Development Center for Biotechnology

 

 

The Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB), partially supported by the Government, is an autonomous, non-profit research and development organization established in March 1984 for the purpose of promoting and upgrading biotechnology industry in Taiwan.

Asian Vegetable Research & Development Center

 

The Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center was established in 1971 to help improve the nutrition, health, and incomes of families in developing countries. The Center's goal is to develop environmentally safe and sustainable vegetable production technologies that can be adapted by national agricultural research systems.

National Health Research Institutes

 

 

The National Health Research Institutes (NHRI) is a non-profit foundation established by the government in 1995. Being an autonomous research organization under the supervision of the Department of Health, the NHRI is dedicated to the enhancement of medical research and the improvement of health care in Taiwan.

Science & Technology Information Center

 

Founded in 1974, the Science and Technology Information Center (STIC) of the National Science Council is commissioned to promote the sci-tech research and development by facilitating the dissemination of sci-tech information across Taiwan as well as other parts of the world.

National Space Program Office

 

In 1991, the National Space Program Office was formally established as the implementing agency of Taiwan’s Fifteen-Year Space Program. Among its goals is to utilize the development of the infrastructure and the capability of integrating large-scale high-tech systems as a solid foundation for the space technology development. It is also one of the goals of the space program to create needed resources for competition in the international market place for space technology and related industries in the future.

National Center for High-performance Computing

 

 

The National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) is a national laboratory founded under the auspices of the NSC in 1991. With a mandate initially to establish a sole, centralized facility for computational resources, the NCHC has since taken on high-performance networking as a new challenge.

Precision Instrument Development Center

 

 

The Precision Instrument Development Center (PIDC) was founded by the NSC in 1974. The purpose of the Center is to strengthen national capability in fabricating scientific instruments in accordance with national development programs and economic progress demands.

National Nano Device Laboratories

 

 

One of the seven national labs in Taiwan is the National Nano Device Laboratories (NDL). The main objectives are to foster high - caliber talents for semiconductor industry and academia; to collaborate with industry and academia for advanced R&D on pivotal technologies of nano devices; to promote the research standard in the electronics area; and to strengthen Taiwan's competitivity in the world's IC market.

Institute of Physics

 

 

The Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, conducts research in areas including theoretical physics, nuclear physics, experimental high energy physics, condensed matter and surface physics, biophysics, and fluid and non-linear mechanics.

Synchrotron Radiation Research Center

 

 

The Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (SRRC) was established by the government to design, construct and operate a 1.5-GeV synchrotron radiation source in Hsinchu. The main objectives of SRRC are to conduct research at the frontiers of basic and applied sciences, to stimulate industrial research and development to upgrade local technical ability through involvement with the construction of the machine, to provide advanced training for students, and to add a new dimension to international collaboration through synchrotron radiation related activities.
